As Shakespeare said “What’s in the name”

Since yesterday we have been engulfed with the controversy of the word #Karachi which has been part of the identity called #Karachibakery for past 60 years in Bandra, Mumbai.

Infact when we travel the country there are many bakeries named under the same banner “Karachi” with no connection to each other, the most popular and famous being Hyderabad’s Karachi Bakery.

It has been delighting palate of Hyderabad since last 6 decades starting in 1952 after 5 years of India’s independence …

Being in India we have witnessed many naming and renaming ceremonies of bigger structures, cities, at times on the whim and fancy of ruling part and at times it has nod of general public.

But when it starts touching people and businesses and doesn’t have a larger bearing to society it hurts and annoys.

How we have Karachi Bakery in Mumbai, Pakistan has it share of stories with Indian names and like Karachi Bakery most of these stores are not pre-partitioned but opened later.

Few of the most famous are Delhi Sweet House in Karachi, Bombay Bakery in Sindh, where people have to line up to buy the fresh bakery items, there is never a moment when bakery is empty.

Digging deeper, we will find special love for Bombay in Karachi, May be because they were the twin cities in the past and shared an amazing past filled, in fact the connection finally got broken in 1965 when the steamer service of Sabarmati and Saraswati were withdrawn between Karachi and Bombay.

Coming back to Karachi’s love for Bombay you will find things like Bombay Sweet house, Bombay nariyal, Bombay Garments and so on and so forth.

This was also done for people who had crossed border post partitioned and had made Pakistan their home, the remembrance of their earlier city would always help them connect with the shop and make loyal customer base.

Whatever the reason being ….there is nothing in the name but there is something beyond the name ….

The era gone by…the romance of the past and an inch of history which we want to be part of every time we step in that store…

Then be it Karachi or Bombay….
